About – Fred Murie

Fred Murie was born in Rennes in 1972. He lives and works in Brittany.

With a background in science, Fred Murie has developed an artistic practice that continues to draw upon that initial training. After many years of collaboration within the duo Spéculaire*, he now pursues his research into memory and its manifestations.

He focuses on traces—whether intimate (stemming from memory-based narratives), natural (extracted from the environment), cultural (drawn from texts or major works), or scientific (derived from physical or biological phenomena).

The past does not vanish; it slips away only to resurface—fragmentary—through language. Whether visual, verbal, or digital, language here is subject to systems of constraints and rules—rules to be subverted, diverted, and transcended to allow the unexpected to emerge.

At the intersection of computer languages ??and artistic installations, the artist creates works in which drawings, images, animations, installations, and digital systems engage in dialogue, offering sensory experiences that shift our perception of the world. Through their very presence, visitors are invited to experience new realities.

These hybrid forms aim to make the elusive perceptible and to revive what is no more. Hovering between appearance and erasure, they question our relationship with absence. Each manifestation of memory offers a partial view of reality, akin to a piece of a puzzle that can never be fully reassembled. The realm of the imagination thus becomes the space where what time has scattered is pieced back together.
